How we approach lead work

Code weights and where they go

Code 4 lead for most step and cover flashings, code 5 for valleys, soakers and back gutters where the lead works harder. Using too thin a code is one of the most common reasons lead work fails early.

Forming it properly

Lengths kept within the limits that stop thermal movement tearing the lead, laps and drips formed correctly, and every piece fixed and clipped so wind cannot lift it. Chemical fixings and mastic are never used where the lead should be dressed and wedged.

Chimneys, valleys and bays

Chimney flashings and back gutters, lead valleys, bay window roofs, dormer cheeks and parapet gutters. Where existing lead has cracked, we renew the whole detail rather than patching one section.

Why does my chimney flashing keep leaking?

The most common causes are lead that was surface sealed rather than chased in, undersized lead code, and missing soakers behind the flashing. All three need the detail forming again properly rather than resealing.

Can you replace stolen lead?

Yes, and we can fit security markings and alternative code specified materials where theft is a recurring problem in the area.

Do you work on listed and conservation properties?

Yes. Traditional lead detailing on period property is core work for us, and we document methods and materials for conservation officers where that is required.
